Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, it became apparent that motorized units needed a coordinated radio command to maintain stable communication between headquarters and combat units in action. At this time, the Sd.Kfz.263 (8-Rad) automobiles began to be heavily used in their new role as mobile command units. One of the first German generals to appreciate the advantages of the Sd.Kfz.263 was Erwin Rommel when he was still commander of the 7th Panzer Division, in the early stages of the conflict.
