The PazerKampfWagen IV, or Panzer IV, was the most widely used German medium tank throughout World War II, and the only one that has the “honor” of having been in production from the beginning to the end of the conflict.
The Panzer IV, in turn, was a tank whose chassis served as the basis for other German military vehicles, such as the Stug IV or the “Wirbeldwind” anti-aircraft weapon. In its initial variants the Panzer IV was not a tank designed for combat with other tanks but for infantry support and for bombing actions against the enemy, hence, as in the variant that Tamiya reproduces in this kit, its gun, although of large caliber, was short, which resulted in a low exit velocity of the projectile when fired, sufficient for the bombardment of enemy positions but not so much to penetrate the armor of the Allied tanks.
The Panzer IV ausf D had a crew of 5 men, weighed about 20 tons, had armor ranging from 10 to 50 mm and its main weapon was a 75 mm KWK 37 L24 gun.
