Description
The Schimmwagen is a unique vehicle in military history. Manufactured by the Germans during World War II, it stands out as the most produced amphibious car in history, was designed by Ferdinand Porsche, had four-wheel drive and was a rare combination of automobile and motorboat, capable of driving on both land and water.
The Schimmwagen was equipped with a four-cylinder, 1.1-liter engine that generated 25 horsepower, allowing it to reach modest highway and river speeds. Its amphibious capability was especially useful in the varied European terrain, which led it to be used for border patrols, medical evacuations and general transport.
