The Merkava is the result of Israel’s desire for a self-built main battle tank with characteristics specific to the type of conflicts occurring in the Middle East. The first Merkava Mk I was put into production in 1979 and since then there have been 4 updates based on the same basic design.
With the Merkava, Israel sought to break its dependence on foreign powers in terms of armored weapons, and they wanted a tank with specific characteristics for fighting in the field, not only maneuverability, armor and firepower, but also enough space for its crew to spend long periods in combat.
The Merkava has a crew of 4 men, weighs 65 tons, reaches a maximum speed of 55 km/h, its maximum armor reaches 15 cm and is a porcelain rolled alloy, steel and nickel and is armed with a 105 mm M68 rifled barrel.
