During the African campaign, the British Army already used Stuart III light tanks, which had their turrets removed and were used as armored vehicles for transporting personnel or for towing artillery pieces. Later, and due to the need for transportation of the foot units, the artillery pieces were ordered to be removed from the M7 Priest, this modification was a great success and caused the troops to rename the modified M7s as “Kangaroo” (Kangarooin English). The mission of these vehicles was to transport guts and equipment to the front line.
