The Zaporozhian Cossacks from the 16th to the 18th century were a group of brave warriors and settlers who inhabited the Zaporozhia region, along the Dnieper River, in what is now Ukraine, were known for their fierce spirit of independence, were expert horsemen and skilled in hand-to-hand combat.
They organized themselves into autonomous military communities called Sich, where they elected their leaders democratically. These Cossacks fought both against the enemies of the Ottoman Empire and Poland-Lithuania and against the invading Russian forces.
