The Repubic P47 was a single-engine aircraft developed by the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Its construction revolved around the use of the exceptional Pratt & Whitney R-2800 “Double Wasp” engine that could develop a power of 2,000 hp, which allowed it, even carrying a heavy load of armament, to reach maximum speeds of 633 km/h (633 mph).
The P47-D variant was upgraded with a new version of the Pratt & Whitney engine, the R-2800-59, which developed even more power than the original, reaching 2,300 hp. The D-25 variant of the P47-D (represented in this Tamiya kit) replaced the previous one, called Razorback, offering improved visibility by replacing its cockpit with a buble.
The P47D was used as a long-range escort aircraft during the German bombing campaign over Germany during the second half of the war. Later it was also employed in fighter-bomber roles, demonstrating its excellent qualities for either role.
