The Austro-Hungarian Empire was part of the so-called Central Powers during the First World War. The Austro-Hungarian army was a very heterogeneous one, composed of soldiers from different countries who very often spoke neither Hungarian nor German. During the conflict the Konichliche Armee suffered heavy defeats, partly due to the lack of supplies and the obsolete industrial system of the Habsburg Empire.
At the end of World War I, the Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated and ceased to exist after several centuries of dominance in Central Europe.
