During the Vietnam War, it became essential to have a light vessel to effectively control river traffic, especially, but not only, on the famous Mekong River.
This is why the U.S. Navy decided to manufacture the River Patrol Boat (or PBR) that has become an iconic image of war, especially with the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’.
The PBR 31 weighed 9 tons, had a standard crew of 4 men, could travel at a speed of 28 knots (about 52 km/h) and was armed with twin M2HB .50 caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns in the bow, a single M2HB in the stern, two M60 7.62 mm machine guns and an MK18 grenade launcher.
