The ANZAC, or Australian and New Zealand Combined Army Corps, became especially well known during World War I as a result of the Gallipoli landing in the Dardanelles Strait. Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, devised this plan with the intention of penetrating the weakest part of the Ottoman Empire and forcing Turkey to surrender quickly. The operation was a failure and 46,000 ANZAC soldiers lost their lives.
