Description

The M1 Abrams is considered, along with perhaps the Leopard 2, the best current battle tank of Western design. Created during the 1970s, it began to be deployed in the 1980s and is still today the main combat tank of the United States with more than 9,000 units created.

It has actively participated in the conflicts of the First Gulf War (1991) where it successfully engaged the more antiquated Iraqi T-55 and T-62, as well as the T-72 of Saddam Hussein’s Republican Guard. He then fought in the Iraq War (2003), in Afghanistan and in the Balkan conflict.

The M1A1 Abrams, weighing 57 tons, has a crew of 4 men, its main weapon is a 120 mm M256 smoothbore cannon and as a secondary weapon a 12.7 mm M2HB heavy machine gun. In addition to its armor (which resists most anti-tank missile impacts), it is protected by camouflage, concealment, active protection and damage control systems.
