The 17th century Austrian musketeers and pikemen were highly trained and disciplined infantrymen who formed the backbone of the Austrian army in the wars of the time.
The musketeers carried muskets with wick-loading muskets and swords, while the pikemen carried long pikes up to four meters long. The pikemen were used to form a defensive barrier while the musketeers fired through gaps in the ranks of pikemen. This defensive tactic proved very effective in the battle. Austrian musketeers and pikemen were used in several important battles of the Thirty Years’ War.
