During the Second World War, the Germans factory primed their vehicles with a red color to protect them from rust or any other deterioration. After this primer coat, they applied another coat of camouflage. This caused the characteristic red color of the primer to appear under the camouflage layer when scratches or chipping occurred.
Towards the end of the conflict, lack of materials and time meant that some tanks took to the battlefield with only the primer coat.
