War elephants were a weapon used with relative assiduity during ancient human history. The first to use this weapon were the Hindus, although undoubtedly the most famous formation of these animals were those taken into combat during the Second Punic War (3rd century BC), when the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca threatened Rome with his army.
Elephants were difficult to coordinate in combat, however, their height, their skin (which acted as natural armor) and their power to charge and break enemy lines made them a fearsome weapon in the ancient world.
