The Vought F4U “Corsair” was the first US Air Force fighter designed to effectively counter the legendary Japanese Zero fighter.
The most unique external features of this aircraft were its propeller, with the largest blades ever used on a fighter, its gull wings or its bubble-shaped cockpit. However, the “Corsair” had some problems, for example, its landing gear was unstable and the pilot’s visibility was reduced due to its elongated nose, these problems were partially corrected in later versions.
The F4U-1D version improved the pilot’s visibility with a redesigned cockpit and allowed the mounting of a 500 kg bomb in the center of the aircraft. It could also be armed with Rockets under its wings, which gave it greater firepower than previous versions.
About 3,700 of the F4U-1D version were built.
