Description

The early stages of the war in the Pacific (during World War II) demonstrated the enormous superiority that the Japanese embarked fighters had over the outdated American fighters, this forced the US General Staff to hasten plans for the design of a more powerful aircraft, the result was that, in June 1942, made its first operational flight the Vought F4U which was known by the nickname of Corsair (Corsair).
The F4U-1 was an embarked monoplane fighter, which mounted an 18-cylinder radial engine, Pratt & Whitney R-2800-8W that developed a power of 2300 hp, reached a maximum speed of 650 km / h: It was armed with 6 M2 Browning 12.7 mm machine guns and could carry up to 910 kg of bombs.
The Corsair remained operational throughout the war, although it was gradually replaced by the F6F Hellcat. It was also one of the most successful aircraft of the conflict with over 2,000 reported victories over Japanese aircraft.
