The UNL-35 was an armored car used during the Spanish Civil War. It was designed in 1937 by the Soviet engineer Nicolai Alimov at the Unión Naval de Levante (UNL) factory in Valencia, where its name comes from. This vehicle was developed to provide support to the Republican infantry, with the aim of improving mobility and protection at the front. The UNL-35 had a chassis based on commercial Ford trucks and was equipped with steel armor up to 10 mm thick. It also had two 7.62 mm machine guns and a rotating turret, giving it considerable defensive capability. Despite being relatively fast and agile for an armored vehicle, it suffered from reliability problems due to a lack of quality materials during its wartime production. The UNL-35 was mainly used by the Republican forces, but some examples were captured and used by Franco’s side.
