Amphibious LVT (acronym for Landing Vehicle Tracked) vehicles were developed to provide the U.S. armed forces, both Army and Marine Corps, with a means suitable for amphibious operations with a good level of protection. Popularly known as “Amtrac”, these vehicles were used on a large scale in the Pacific theater of operations against Japanese forces, as well as in the last year of the war on the European front. The LVT-4 model represented a significant improvement over previous versions. Its redesigned layout allowed the engine to be placed in a central position, freeing the rear to install a ramp that facilitated the rapid loading and unloading of light vehicles or small-caliber artillery pieces, essential to support the landing troops. It was the most successful version of the series, with the largest number of units produced during World War II.
