The P-47 Thunderbolt was the first fighter to be equipped with a supercharger with a 2000 horsepower engine, allowing it to fly at the same altitude as the Allied bombers it could escort on bombing missions over Germany. Armed with eight 12.7 mm machine guns, the Thunderbolt, along with the P-51 Mustang, were the primary fighters of the U.S. Army Air Force. In this model Tamiya reproduces the P-47D version, nicknamed “razorback”, due to the shape of its upper fuselage behind the cockpit. The P-47D had a one-ton payload capacity and its ruggedness made it the perfect machine for ground attack missions.
