The Portland-class heavy cruiser Indianapolis belonged to the U.S. Navy, which commissioned her in 1932. During the war she participated in several battles in the Pacific (although she was not present at the attack on Pearl Harbor because she was on maneuvers at the time). The Indianapolis is most famous for having served as a transport for the fissile material used to build the first atomic bomb that was later dropped on Hiroshima.
