The Turkish Army, part of the Ottoman Empire, played an important role in World War I as a member of the Central Powers. Although it faced organizational, equipment and morale problems, it fought on several key fronts. On the Caucasus Front, it engaged Russia, while at Gallipoli (1915-1916) it successfully repelled an Allied attempt to invade the peninsula, in one of its greatest victories. In Mesopotamia and Palestine, however, he suffered significant defeats against British forces. Despite some tactical successes, the accumulated defeats and internal crisis contributed to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after the war.
