The Avenger was a torpedo bomber of the U.S. Navy during World War II. During February 1943, the Navy requested to investigate ways to increase the Avenger’s power, so an improved design study was undertaken with a 2000 hp R-2800 engine and a 250CE turret. High engine demand for the engine for other higher priority aircraft prevented the design study from moving forward, but the need for additional power for the Avenger was recognized. The TBM-3 retained the armored wing of the TBF-1C with standardized zero-length Mk 5 rocket launchers in place of the earlier Mk 4 rocket rails. The cockpit instruments were rearranged and, to improve night vision for the pilots, the instrument panel lighting was changed from direct ultraviolet to indirect red lighting… Thus, the instrument panel lighting was finally configured.
