The appearance of new German heavy tanks on the eastern front, in particular the Tiger, prompted Soviet engineers to develop a new generation of armored vehicles based on the T-100 prototype. The torsion bar suspension was mounted higher on the hull, which reduced the height of the tank from the ground and allowed the installation of a larger turret, capable of accommodating a 100 mm gun (on the JS-1) or a 122 mm gun (on the JS-2, which appeared in late 1943).
