The Italian M11/39 medium tank was one of the first tanks designed and produced by Italy before and during World War II. Developed in 1937 and manufactured in 1939, the M11/39 was armed with a 37 mm gun mounted on the hull, as well as two machine guns in a small turret. This design proved unconventional, as it limited the main gun’s ability to rotate, hindering its combat effectiveness. The tank was powered by a 105 horsepower diesel engine, giving it a top speed of 32 km/h and a range of about 200 km. Its armor of up to 30 mm offered basic protection against small arms and shrapnel, but proved inadequate against more advanced Allied tanks. The M11/39 was mainly used in the North African theater of war, where it quickly showed its limitations against British tanks. It was replaced by more advanced models, such as the M13/40.
