The Italian M13/40 tank was a medium armored vehicle used by the Italian Royal Army during World War II. Developed in the late 1930s, it was a significant improvement over its predecessors, the L3 and L6 light tanks. Equipped with a 47 mm gun and three 8 mm Breda machine guns, the M13/40 was designed to engage other tanks and provide infantry support.
The M13/40 had 30 mm front, 25 mm side and 6 mm rear armor, which offered moderate protection against small arms and artillery fragments. Its 125-horsepower Fiat SPA diesel engine allowed it to reach a top speed of 32 km/h and an operating range of approximately 200 km.
The M13/40 was used extensively in North Africa, where it proved relatively effective at first, but was soon outclassed by the more modern and better armed Allied tanks. Desert conditions, combined with mechanical problems and lack of resources, affected his performance.
