The Battle of Arras, fought between April 9 and May 16, 1917, was an Allied offensive during World War I in northern France.
Led primarily by British forces, the battle aimed to break through German defenses and support the French in their offensive on the Chemin des Dames.
The attack began with a successful advance by British troops, managing to take important positions, including the strategic high ground of Vimy Ridge, captured by Canadian forces.
This initial advance was one of the most successful Allied advances of the war.
However, despite the territorial gains, the well-entrenched German forces were able to hold off the Allied advance.
The battle quickly became a war of attrition, with heavy casualties on both sides.
Although it did not achieve the expected strategic success, the Battle of Arras was notable for the effective use of artillery and the coordination between infantry and tanks.
