Description

The British Mk I “Male” tank was the first operational battle tank in history, introduced during World War I in 1916.
Designed to break through German trench lines on the Western Front, the Mk I represented a revolutionary technological innovation.
This armored vehicle was equipped with tracks to traverse difficult terrain, such as mud and trench craters.
The “Male” version of the Mk I was armed with two 6-pounder Hotchkiss guns, located in side sponsons, and four Hotchkiss M1909 machine guns, designed to engage both infantry and light fortifications.
In contrast, the “Female” version carried only machine guns.
The Mk I had a crew of eight and a top speed of around 6 km/h. Although these early tanks suffered from mechanical problems and were vulnerable to artillery, their appearance at the Battle of the Somme marked the beginning of mechanized warfare, changing the way war was fought forever.
