The Battle of the Somme, fought between July 1 and November 18, 1916, was one of the bloodiest engagements of the First World War.
It took place in northern France, near the Somme River, and was a joint offensive between British and French forces against the German army, with the aim of relieving pressure on French troops at Verdun and weakening the German lines.
The first day of the battle is infamous for being the deadliest in the history of the British army, with more than 57,000 casualties.
Despite technological advances, such as the initial use of tanks, the terrain and German defenses proved difficult to overcome.
By the end of the battle, the Allied forces had gained approximately 10 kilometers of ground, but at a cost of more than one million casualties between the two sides.
The Battle of the Somme symbolizes the brutality and stalemate of trench warfare.
