During the 17th century, Sweden became a military power in Europe, thanks in large part to its advanced artillery. Swedish artillery was known to be highly accurate and effective on the battlefield. The cannons were of high quality and were built in dedicated state factories, special projectiles were used, such as spherical iron bullets.

Swedish artillery was instrumental in the victory at the Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 and the Battle of Narva in 1700.
