Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery was one of the most prominent and successful British commanders of World War II.
His military career began in World War I, where he suffered severe wounds, but continued to serve as a staff officer.
During the interwar period, Montgomery held various posts and, just before World War II, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Division of the British Expeditionary Force in France.
In the fall of 1942, he assumed command of British forces in North Africa, winning a decisive victory over German Field Marshal Rommel, known as the “Desert Fox.”
In December 1943, he was appointed commander of the 21st Army Group and overall commander of Allied ground forces in Europe, participating in the planning of Operation Overlord.
In 1944, he was promoted to field marshal.
Known as “Monty,” he was appreciated for his modesty and closeness to the soldiers.
