The Winter War was an armed conflict that broke out on the margins of World War II, when, in November 1939, the U.S.S.R. invaded Finland by surprise. After months of hard fighting the Finns managed to resist and stabilize the front in the defensive line called Mannerheim.
Hostilities ended in March 1941 with the Moscow peace treaty by which Finland ceded 11 percent of its territory.
