The Supermarine Spitfire is considered by many to be the most elegant single-seat aircraft of World War II. It was designed by Reginal J. Mitchell and the first prototype flew in 1936. It was a very advanced aircraft for its time, with a streamlined fuselage and very well riveted.
The first versions of the Spitfire proved their worth in the Battle of Britain (summer 1940) and by 1941 most of the RAF fighter squadrons were composed of this fighter.
The V series Spitfire was the most widely produced of this fighter throughout the war, the improvements made were related to a better armament (in the case of the Vb mixed two 7.7 mm machine guns with two 20mm guns) and a Merlin 45 engine more powerful than that of the Mk.I and Mk.II.
