The KV-I was a Russian heavy tank that proved to be very effective in the first months of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) against the Germans. As the conflict progressed and the German panzers improved the guns of their tanks, the Soviets were forced to increase the armor of their KVs, to such an extent that they proved to be too heavy for the engine they were fitted with. Breakdowns and reports from the front that pointed to the tank’s lack of mobility led to the construction of a lighter version, the KV-Is.
