In 1942, Soviet military engineers were in an urgent search for suitable chassis to mount the BM-13-16 “Katiusha” rocket launchers, as the ZIS-6 trucks they were using were becoming obsolete.
Faced with this need, that year they tested and deployed at least 9 truck chassis provided by the Lend-Lease program, which allowed for the replacement and upgrade of their own vehicles.
One of these trucks was the GMC CCKW-352, better known as the “Deuce-and-a-Half” or “Jimmy.”
Of the more than half a million units produced between 1941 and the end of the war, with different body types and wheelbase configurations, the Soviet Union received approximately 6,700 units.
These trucks proved to be extremely useful not only for the assembly of “Katiusha” rocket launchers, but also for logistic transport in general, contributing significantly to the Soviet war effort during World War II.
