The Ilyushin Il-2 was a Soviet-made ground attack aircraft that received the nickname “flying tank” for its extraordinary armor, armament and for becoming the direct support of ground troops in battle.
Its mass production began in February 1941, of which several modifications were produced and used on all eastern battle fronts. It was designed so that an armored capsule protected the engine and cockpit, the wing had duralumin covers, while the tail section of the fuselage was glued with plywood.
The attack aircraft had an armament consisting of two 20 mm ShVAK guns installed on the wing and a pair of 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns. It also carried eight 132 mm or 82 mm rocket tubes under its wings, and up to 600 kg of bombs could be loaded in the holds.
