Founded in 1960, the Vietcong aimed to overthrow the U.S.-backed government of South Vietnam and reunify the country under communist rule.
Composed of local fighters and supported by North Vietnam, the Vietcong used guerrilla tactics, ambushes and tunnel networks to engage U.S. and South Vietnamese forces.
