During World War II, the bicycle played a significant role in the German army, especially within light infantry and reconnaissance units. Bicycle troops, known as Radfahrtruppen, were integrated into motorized divisions and special forces such as paratroopers. The bicycles were rugged, designed to support the weight of armed soldiers, equipment and supplies. Some incorporated racks for rifles or light machine guns. Although less glamorous than tanks or motorized vehicles, bicycles enabled German troops to deploy quickly and cover long distances, especially on fronts such as the East, where roads were scarce.
