Zimmerit was an antimagnetic coating developed by Germany during World War II to protect its armored vehicles against magnetic mines. Introduced in 1943, it consisted of a paste based on barium sulfate, adhesives and pigments, applied in a striated texture on the surface of the tank. Its purpose was to prevent magnetic mines, used by enemy infantry, from adhering to the armor. Although effective, the Zimmerit was discontinued in 1944 due to unfounded rumors about its flammability and the decline in the use of magnetic mines by the Allies. It was an innovative example of passive protection.
