From 1861 to 1864 there were 4 years of war, which went down in history as the American Civil War (or War of Secession), where some southern states (known as Secessionists or Confederates) decided to declare their independence from the rest of the country, which led the northern states (Unionists or Federals) to go to war in order to maintain the unity of the nation.
The industrial differences between the North (much more developed) and the South had an impact on the military equipment and uniforms of Confederate soldiers who in many cases had to improvise both in order to continue fighting.
