The
Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf D was an armored half-track vehicle used by the Wehrmacht during World War II.
Designed and manufactured by
Hanomag, this vehicle was an improved version of the Sd.Kfz.
251, designed to transport a motorized infantry squad and provide combat support.
The Ausf D version introduced several improvements over its predecessors, such as simplified production to facilitate mass production.
It was equipped with a 6-cylinder Maybach HL 42 engine, which allowed it to reach speeds of up to
55 km/h on the road.
Its armor was 14.5 mm at the front, providing moderate protection against small arms and shrapnel. The Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf D could carry up to 12 soldiers and was armed with two MG34 or MG42 machine guns, mounted in the front and rear of the troop compartment.
It was used on numerous fronts, from the East to the West, being appreciated for its mobility and ability to protect troops during advance and retreat.
Despite its vulnerabilities to anti-tank weapons, the Sd.Kfz.
251/1 Ausf D became an essential component of Panzergrenadier divisions, contributing significantly to German mobile warfare tactics.
