The JSU 152 was a Soviet heavy tank destroyer (it proved especially effective in combat against German Tiger or Panther tanks) but was also used on numerous occasions as a self-propelled artillery, using its menacing cannon. M1937 with a caliber of 152 mm and that could develop indirect fire at an effective distance of 13 km.
The JSU 152 is an evolution of the SU 152, the latter used the KV-1 chassis while the JSU-152 used the JS-II chassis and diesel engine. JSU 152 entered combat for the first time during Operation Bagration in the summer of 1944. The effectiveness of this vehicle, combined with its reliability and mass production, made it a terrible weapon that Soviet soldiers nicknamed Zveroboy (“The Killer Beast”).
The JSU 152 weighed 48 tons, had a maximum frontal armor of almost 300mm and was capable of reaching maximum road speeds of 40km/h. Five thousand of these beasts were built from World War II until their retirement in the mid-1970s.
