Self-propelled artillery was created as mobile covering fire units. During the invasion of France in May 1940, the Wehrmacht captured a large number of FCM 36 light tanks, which the German company Alkett later modified to add the 105 mm howitzer leFH 16.
This vehicle was part of the Western Rapid Action Brigade and was later transferred to the 21st Panzer Division.
