The Army Medical Service (Sanitaetskorps der Armee in German) was responsible for all tasks related to the medical support of the Wehrmacht.
For the evacuation of the wounded, a variety of transport vehicles were used, including horse-drawn carts, armored personnel carriers, and ambulance trucks.
Most of the ambulance trucks used for the evacuation of the wounded were modified versions of military and civilian vehicles, comprising both standard wheeled vehicles and tracked and half-tracked “Maultiers”.
These vehicles had enclosed bodies equipped with stretchers to ensure proper transfer of the wounded.
In addition, the vehicles were marked and camouflaged according to the military unit to which they belonged.
The Red Cross was painted in a white circle or square with no specific size, although often the only visible marking on the trucks was a white flag with a red cross.
In the folklore of Wehrmacht soldiers, these medical transport vehicles were commonly referred to as ‘Sanka’, a term that reflected their crucial role on the battlefield.
