In Ancient Greece, ritual sacrifices before battle were a fundamental practice to gain the favor of the gods. Before an engagement, generals and soldiers would make offerings to deities such as Ares, Zeus or Athena, seeking protection and victory. The most common sacrifice was that of an animal, usually a bull, ram or goat. The entrails were examined, especially the liver, since its appearance was interpreted as a divine omen.

These rituals, known as sacrificial or sphagiai, were performed on improvised altars in the camp or in temples before the march. In addition to blood sacrifices, libations of wine, milk or honey were offered. Warriors also made prayers and promises to dedicate trophies or temples if they won the victory. These ceremonies not only had a religious purpose, but also strengthened the morale of the army, reaffirming their confidence before combat.
