The A-50, known to NATO as “Mainstay”, was developed by the G.M. Beriev complex in Taganrog, based on the Il-76 military cargo aircraft to replace the veteran Tu-126. Equipped with the huge Shmel radar, it provides an effective early warning and control system. In service since 1989, the A-50 can detect and track air and surface targets, transmitting its position to command posts to coordinate the use of weapons. In addition, it serves as an airborne command center and guides fighters and attack aircraft to targets in the air, on land or at sea.
