Peter I the Great, Tsar of Russia, initiated a program of modernization of the Russian army in the 18th century, which included significant improvements in artillery. During his reign, cannon factories were built throughout Russia and craftsmen and technicians were hired from Western Europe to work in them. Russian firearms became more accurate and powerful, new types of guns were developed, such as the “mortar howitzer” and the “six-pounder gun”. With these improvements, the Russian army became a formidable force in Europe and Asia, and helped Peter I expand his empire through warfare.
