The GMC 2 ½ ton truck was produced in large numbers and can be considered the backbone of U.S. Army logistics during World War II. It stood out for its robust and reliable structure, which found its strong point in its excellent off-road performance thanks to its six-wheel drive and the effective design of its suspensions. Numerous variants were produced, in addition to the more common cargo versions with open or closed cab, long or short range. Specific configurations were also developed, some of them created directly “in the field”, for more specific and concrete uses. Its role was crucial in meeting the demanding logistical needs following the early stages of the Normandy landings, facilitating the transport and movement of large quantities of troops and materials.
