The Panzer IV was the only German tank that remained in production throughout the war, it was known by the German crews as “The workhorse” of the PanzerWaffe. Obviously such a long life had as a consequence that the Panzer IV had different roles throughout the war, the first versions of this tank (from the A variant to the F1 variant) were designed to give indirect support fire on German defensive positions, hence the use of the short gun. The Panzer IV Ausf F weighed around 25 tons, its armor had been improved with respect to the previous versions and went from a maximum thickness of 35 mm to 50 mm, it reached a maximum road speed of 40 km/h on the road. Nearly 500 of this version of Panzer IV were produced before production of the long-barrelled F2 version began.
