The P-47D-28RA Thunderbolt was an advanced version of the U.S. P-47 Thunderbolt fighter, one of the largest and heaviest fighter aircraft of World War II.
Developed by Republic Aviation, the Thunderbolt was known for its ruggedness, large armament capacity and ability to perform escort and ground attack missions.
The D-28RA model, manufactured at the Evansville, Indiana, plant, incorporated significant improvements, such as a more powerful 2,535-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-2800-59 engine and a bubble-type canopy, which improved pilot visibility.
These improvements enabled the P-47D-28RA to reach higher speeds and altitudes, as well as increasing its combat effectiveness.
The Thunderbolt was used extensively in the European and Pacific theaters, excelling in bomber escort missions and in attacks on ground targets thanks to its high bomb and rocket-carrying capacity.
Its durability and power made it a valuable asset to the Allied Air Forces.
