Between January and May 1944 in Italy, the Allies under General Clark tried to storm the Gustav line, defended by the German 10th Army. In order to break the defensive line it was necessary to dominate the city of Cassino, whose position allowed to control the valley of the Liri river. In turn, in order to control Cassino, it was necessary to take its monastery(Montecassino), which was located in a privileged position on the top of a mountain.
For 5 months, that monastery witnessed one of the greatest battles of the war on the western front.
